Album title – “Night Travels”
Artist – “Ashley Davis”
With Special Guests:
All of the songs on this 2014 album are written or arranged by Ashley Davis. She is a spectacularly talented singer and songwriter coming from the plains of Kansas. With all 11 tracks on this CD the entangled theme is night time, love and dreaming, according to Ashley. Each song is recorded and arranged in such a way that it is reminiscent of dreaming.
“Night Travels” is a rich tapestry of colorful sounds from Ireland, Scotland, Kansas and the Appalachian region. You will hear Celtic, country, Americana and bluegrass traditions. A type of mixed music we hear often with Irish minded musicians and singers.
Ashley Davis, an internationally famous artist, has returned full circle with this, her fourth album. She has visited her youth, her young influences and her love of Irish music. She offers on this album a little more of herself letting go of academic or cerebral music and invoking the emotional a little more. “Night Travels” is an unforgettable arrangement of music that is very calming, relaxing, dreamy, sometimes sad, but always a complete joy to listen to.
Ashley Davis and her Guests
The album was recorded in Dublin,New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Nashville and Kansas. Several renowned musicians join her. Ashley shares vocals with Sara Watkins, known for her work in the Grammy-winning trio Nickel Creek. With Sara also on fiddle, this song sets the tone of the entire CD, songs of dreams. The second track ‘I Follow You’ is co-written with harpist Cormac de Barra and is sung in Gaelic; the sixth track ‘With You Tonight’ features acclaimed violinist Eileen Ivers; on the track ‘Beside You’ Ashley Davis shares the vocals with Moya Brennan, the voice of Clannad, for whom she wrote the song. Appropriately the CD ends with a beautiful song entitled “Dreams will Come” which tells us “follow me my love and dreams will come.”
The musicians on “Night Travels” are superb as expected, welding such instruments as the Fiddle, Accordion, Dobro, Mandolin, Viola, Guitar, Flute, Banjo, Marxophone and Bodhran. If one were to try and compare Ashley Davis’s music to anything it would be hard. It is pretty unique. We wont even try to compare it to anyone else. Let’s just say it is very good music for those who love Celtic influenced easy listening vocal folk music. You will want to check it out and add it to your growing collection of some of the worlds great Celtic music.
