It is said that Irish dance began as a way for young kids to dance without being noticed.  Dancing was frowned upon in old Ireland, but the people couldn’t be stopped from dancing.  Since on occasion bystanders might walk past a house and look in a window, Irish dancing was a way to dance without the upper body moving, and so the dancer would not be noticed practicing the art.  Whether that is true or not is unknown, but that is the legend.

There are several types of gifts that can be given to an Irish dancer or dancing fan.  A simple key chain with a dancer on it makes an easy gift.  Irish dancers wear special soft shoes called ghillies for some dancing, or hard shoes of which more people are familiar.  You can find key chains with miniature ghillies hanging from them.

Irish dancers wear socks when performing called poodle socks.  If you know a dancer’s size you can always get a few pairs of those, to save the dancer some expense.  Along with that, dancers usually use sock glue for holding their socks up, of course.  That would make a nice part of an Irish dance gift package you may put together for a dancer.

There is always a nice pin or two that you can find in an Irish gift shop or online, either depicting ghillies or hard shoes, or maybe in the shape of an Irish dancer complete with the fancy dress.  Some pins may simply say “Irish Dancer” and others are the fancy jeweled type that can be used to hold up a dancer’s cape (if they wear one).

One very special Irish dance gift that my daughter always liked was a doll likeness of an Irish dancer.  These can get expensive though.  They range in size from 6 inches to about 14 inches.  They usually come with a stand and a card detailing some of the history or reasons for the doll’s dress.  They can be porcelain or plastic.  Ideally you can begin collecting these for your child and get a new one as a gift every year, although there may not be that many styles available.  I even got my daughter an Irish dancer Barbie one year.
